The Fly Five curriculum is standards aligned, with competencies and developmentally appropriate skills that students can practice in and out of school. The C.A.R.E.S. competencies guide educators in creating actionable learning opportunities that prepare every student for academic and behavioral success. Our standards are divided into five C.A.R.E.S. competencies: cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control.
The Fly Five C.A.R.E.S. competencies are CASEL aligned. CASEL is a trusted source of knowledge about high-quality, evidence-based social and emotional learning. CASEL seeks to help make evidence-based curriculum an integral part of education from preschool through high school. Explore our CASEL-aligned C.A.R.E.S. competencies and standards below!

“Fly Five has really increased how we all look out for each other and can problem-solve by ourselves.” Serena, Fly Five fifth grader
In this short video, hear from Fly Five students, as they describe their Fly Five learning experiences and what social and emotional learning has offered them.
The Fly Five Success Stories highlight the real-world experiences of Fly Five practitioners who are implementing the curriculum to address challenges in the field. In our first Success Story, Solving the Four Square Conflict, we follow two Fly Five educators, Ina and Laura, as they turn a popular game of Four Square into an opportunity to put their students’ readiness into action.
Watch this video to see how Fly Five resolves conflict resolutions!
By using the Fly Five conflict-resolution steps and vocabulary, their students were able to practice and build assertiveness skills such as seeking help and problem-solving. Deepening their competence, students in Ina and Laura’s classroom wrote a pledge dedicated to making four square fairer for all players.
“We went around in a circle talking about four square and how they feel six weeks after conflict resolution lessons…and they feel like it’s gotten better! Some have even said they walk by it and it doesn’t seem as stressful.” Ina Pannell-St. Surin
In this Fly Five fifth-grade lesson demo, we follow Fly Five educator Ina Pannell-St. Surin, as she implements a lesson on assertiveness, where learners practice the aligned standard “Expressing Strong Emotions and Opinions Effectively.”
Watch as Ina utilizes the Fly Five curriculum to introduce new content, model effective strategies, and facilitate learning activities to promote student understanding and exploration of the standard.
Our curriculum is designed to support the Fly Five Theory of Change, which targets positive outcomes for teachers, students, and families alike. By supporting the development of student mindsets and well-being, educational stakeholders can improve behaviors and academic performance in their classrooms.
In a recent study, we examined the effectiveness of the Fly Five curriculum in three international schools. Data highlighted social skills and emotional regulation improvement, increased student engagement, and a sense of school belonging, among other positive outcomes. This research is part of an ongoing study exploring how Fly Five builds students' readiness and competence, which leads to positive behavioral and academic outcomes. Check out the details of the study below.
